Devotion - May 22, 2013

The LORD said, “If as one people speaking the same language they have begun to do this, then nothing they plan to do will be impossible for them. Come, let us go down and confuse their language so they will not understand each other.”

Genesis 11:6-7

What is God's desire for us humans? What does he want for you and me?

God's will is simple: God wants humans to go to heaven. Because of that, God stepped into human history in a big way. The human race was on the fast pace to completely rejecting God and his love.

Prayer:

Oh Savior, work in my life in whatever way necessary so that through your Word I stay on the way to heaven. In your name I pray. Amen.

Devotion - October 17, 2012

The LORD God said, "It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him."

Genesis 2:18

A Divine Revelation Regarding Relationships

It was the sixth day of creation. At the end of each previous day, God declared that what he had created was good. On the sixth day, however, God revealed that something was not good. It was not good for man to be alone.

So God provided man with the perfect companion. Using one of Adam’s ribs God created woman.

Prayer:

(Christian Worship: A Lutheran Hymnal - 604)

O love that casts out fear, O love that casts out sin,
Oh, stay no more without But come and dwell within.
True sunlight of the soul, Surround us as we go;
So shall our way be safe, Our feet no straying know.

Devotion - July 26, 2012

Joseph said to his brothers, “I am Joseph! Is my father still living?” But his brothers were not able to answer him, because they were terrified at his presence. Then Joseph said to his brothers, “Come close to me.” When they had done so, he said, “I am your brother Joseph, the one you sold into Egypt! And now, do not be distressed and do not be angry with yourselves for selling me here, because it was to save lives that God sent me ahead of you.

Genesis 45:3-5a

COMFORT ONE ANOTHER

Joseph could contain himself no longer. In an emotionally charged scene, he revealed himself to his brothers. “I am Joseph!” They were stunned. In terror they wondered what would happen to them. They still feared the fallout of their evil behavior against Joseph.

Joseph reached out with open arms and tenderly invited his brothers to come close to him.

Prayer:

Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves have received from God (2 Corinthians 1:3,4).

Devotion - July 24, 2012

When portions were served to them from Joseph’s table, Benjamin’s portion was five times as much as anyone else’s. So they feasted and drank freely with him… “Very well, then,” he said, “let it be as you say. Whoever is found to have it will become my slave; the rest of you will be free from blame.”

Genesis 43:34; 44:10

TREAT OTHERS WITH UNSELFISH LOVE

As a boy, Joseph received favorable treatment from his father Jacob because Joseph was the son of his beloved wife, Rachel. Joseph’s brothers were very jealous. Their envy grew to hatred and their hatred led to selling Joseph into slavery.

Twenty years passed. Joseph wondered if his brothers harbored the same jealousy toward Benjamin.

Prayer:

Lead me, O God, to repent of my sinful selfishness and rejoice in the forgiveness that you give me through my Savior Jesus. Help me to treat others with the kind of love you have for me in Jesus. Amen.

Devotion - July 19, 2012

As Joseph looked about and saw his brother Benjamin, his own mother's son, he asked, "Is this your youngest brother, the one you told me about?" And he said, "God be gracious to you, my son." Deeply moved at the sight of his brother, Joseph hurried out and looked for a place to weep. He went into his private room and wept there.

Genesis 43:29-30

PRAY THAT GOD WILL BLESS OTHERS

Finally the day arrived when Joseph got the opportunity to see his full brother, Benjamin. His brothers brought him safely to Egypt. The moment of meeting Benjamin was overwhelming for Joseph. He had to leave the room and wept privately. How deeply he loved his brother and greatly rejoiced to see him!

Prayer:

Lord, I pray for my family that you may help and protect us by your power and love. Bring us close together and help us support one another. Especially create and sustain faith in Jesus so that we may be members of your family forever.  Amen.

Devotion - July 17, 2012

When Joseph came home, they presented to him the gifts they had brought into the house, and they bowed down before him to the ground. He asked them how they were, and then he said, "How is your aged father you told me about? Is he still living?" They replied, "Your servant our father is still alive and well."

Genesis 43:26-28

HONOR OUR PARENTS

When Joseph’s brothers arrived at home in Canaan, they reported their experience to Jacob and repeated the ruler’s demand for Benjamin to come to Egypt. Jacob flatly refused to allow Benjamin to go. He had lost his beloved Joseph and feared the same would happen to Benjamin. But the famine persisted and the family’s food supply was depleted.

Prayer:

Thank you, heavenly Father, for the gift of parents. Bless them with children who honor them out of love for you. Amen.

Devotion - July 12, 2012

Joseph gave orders to fill their bags with grain, to put each man's silver back in his sack, and to give them provisions for their journey. After this was done for them, they loaded their grain on their donkeys and left.

Genesis 42:25-26

CLING TO THE PROMISES OF GOD

Joseph was the governor of Egypt and administered a massive food program for famine-stricken people. The usual manner of business was for his officers to collect money from people for the food they needed. This was fair practice and assured that there would be enough grain for all the people during the seven years of famine.

Prayer:

Almighty God, your Word is true and your promises will not fail. I praise you for keeping your promise of sending Jesus to be my Savior. Sustain me through all experiences of life and finally lead me safely home to heaven.  Amen.

Devotion - July 10, 2012

Joseph’s brothers said to one another, "Surely we are being punished because of our brother. We saw how distressed he was when he pleaded with us for his life, but we would not listen; that's why this distress has come upon us." Reuben replied, "Didn't I tell you not to sin against the boy? But you wouldn't listen! Now we must give an accounting for his blood." They did not realize that Joseph could understand them, since he was using an interpreter. He turned away from them and began to weep, but then turned back and spoke to them again. He had Simeon taken from them and bound before their eyes.

Genesis 42:21-24

FORGIVE AND FORGET

Joseph spoke harshly to his brothers—not because he wanted to hurt them, but he wanted to see if they had changed. He accused them of being spies. He made them squirm under his threats. He forced them to spend three days in jail. Then he told them that one of them had to remain in prison, while the others returned with food supplies to their homeland.

Prayer:

Our Father in heaven, forgive our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Amen.

Devotion - July 5, 2012

The devotions on Tuesday and Thursday for the rest of July will be based on the life of Joseph recorded in the book of Genesis, giving us lessons from God’s Word about family life.

And this is how you will be tested: As surely as Pharaoh lives, you will not leave this place unless your youngest brother comes here.

Genesis 42:15

CARE ENOUGH TO HELP

Joseph had a difficult family life. His brothers hated and mistreated him. Mercilessly, they sold him to slave traders who took him to Egypt. There he was imprisoned unjustly for many years. But God lifted him from prison to palace. Joseph was appointed to a high position in government.

Prayer:

Loving Father in heaven, fill me with concern for people’s souls that I might help them by telling them of your great love. Amen.
