“Surely I am with you always.”

Matthew 28:20

"It seems like the hurrier I go, the behinder I get!" We've heard it; we've been there; we've done that.

"I can't seem to make any progress!" Again, been there; done that.

"I feel like everything is against me!" Yes, been there, done that, too.

"I feel like I'm all alone." No! That’s not true. That’s not your situation. You are not all alone!

Prayer:

Lord God, I place myself into your care, confident in your promise to always be with me. Lead me through life, guarding me against all danger of soul and body, and sustaining my saving faith in Jesus. Amen.

Devotion - November 29, 2011

Then the governor’s soldiers took Jesus into the Praetorium and gathered the whole company of soldiers around him. They stripped him and put a scarlet robe on him, and then twisted together a crown of thorns and set it on his head. They put a staff in his right hand and knelt in front of him and mocked him. “Hail, king of the Jews!” they said. They spit on him, and took the staff and struck him on the head again and again. After they had mocked him, they took off the robe and put his own clothes on him. Then they led him away to crucify him.

Matthew 27:27-31

In a little over a year someone will once again be sworn in as President of the United States of America. The Presidential Inauguration began as a simple oath-taking ceremony, but now includes a luncheon with Congress, parades, speeches, a presidential medal, and a prayer service among other things.

Prayer:

Dearest Jesus, help me to see your greatest love in your deepest humiliation. As I ponder your suffering and death, remind me of your resurrection and glory. Lead me to joyfully live my life for you. Amen.

Devotion - November 14, 2011

“But while they were on their way to buy the oil, the bridegroom arrived. The virgins who were ready went in with him to the wedding banquet. And the door was shut. Later the others also came. ‘Sir! Sir!’ they said. ‘Open the door for us!’ But he replied, ‘I tell you the truth, I don’t know you.’ Therefore keep watch, because you do not know the day or the hour.”

Matthew 25:10-13

Inside or Outside

Jesus’ parable of the ‘Ten Virgins’ ends with the exhortation, “Keep watch, because you do not know the day or the hour.” It also illustrates two different ways to approach the day of the Lord’s coming. One is to be prepared as the five wise virgins were. The other is to remain unprepared as the five foolish virgins.

Prayer:

O gracious Savior, I know you are coming again in glory. Give me the strength of faith to prepare myself for that glorious day. Bless me with your forgiveness and with the Holy Spirit so that I am always ready. Amen!

“When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, he will sit on his throne in heavenly glory. All the nations will be gathered before him, and he will separate the people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. He will put the sheep on his right and the goats on his left. Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father.”

Matthew 25:31-34

Divine Separation

Bob never lacked for self-confidence. He considered his life and his accomplishments, and was completely satisfied. There were no unattained goals. There were no unfulfilled plans. There was also no hesitation on Bob’s part to let people know what he had done.

One day his friend, Richard, asked Bob a question.

Prayer:

O gracious Savior, I thank you for cleansing me from my sin and preparing me to stand ready on the day of your return. Help me live every day with this confidence and to your glory. Amen!

Daily devotion from Matthew 10:17-20.

Devotion - October 31, 2011

“Be on your guard against men; they will hand you over to the local councils and flog you in their synagogues. On my account you will be brought before governors and kings as witnesses to them and to the Gentiles. But when they arrest you, do not worry about what to say or how to say it. At that time you will be given what to say, for it will not be you speaking, but the Spirit of your Father speaking through you.”

Matthew 10:17-20

I don’t know what to say!

If you’re like me, you have probably had that awkward moment when you didn’t know exactly what to say. It could have been when your friend shared some really bad news. It could have come when someone dropped an odd comment on religion, a comment that you knew was contrary to the clear teaching of the Bible… but how do you react?

Prayer:

(Christian Worship: A Lutheran Hymnal – 293):
God’s Word is our great heritage and shall be ours forever;
To spread its light from age to age shall be our chief endeavor.
Through life it guides our way; in death it is our stay.
Lord, grant, while worlds endure,
We keep its teachings pure throughout all generations. Amen.
