Devotion - January 5, 2012

Being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.

Philippians 1:6

The Christian's Confidence in the Outcome

The apostle Paul expressed his confidence that the Christians in Philippi would remain firm in the faith and thus attain eternal glory. He was confident of this grand result because it rested on God's gracious purposes.

Prayer:

Lord, work through the gospel to preserve me in saving faith. Give me the confidence that by your power and according to your promise, you will bring me to live in heaven because Jesus lived and died for me. In his name I pray. Amen.

Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name.

Philippians 2:9

It’s not what you know. It’s who you know. Why does the restaurant manager hire one teenager while another does not even get an interview? The manager knew the family of the teen she hired. She knew nothing about the family of the other teen.

It pays to have friends in high places.

Prayer:

King of kings, Lord of lords, Jesus Christ, lift our eyes to clearly see your exaltation, to praise your perfect work on our behalf, and to exalt you with a life that pleases you in every way. Amen.

Devotion - October 19, 2011

I eagerly expect and hope that I will in no way be ashamed, but will have sufficient courage so that now as always Christ will be exalted in my body, whether by life or by death.

Philippians 1:20

“Life means everything” is the basis for the way many people evaluate their existence. The stuff of life defines why and how we live. We want more of the stuff that gives us pleasure. We want less—possibly even eliminate—all the stuff that does not give us pleasure. What do we have to live for but this?

Prayer:

Jesus Christ, Savior of all people, give me courage to live every moment for you and to glorify you in death, trusting your promise to give eternal life to everyone who believes in you. Amen.

Devotion - September 29, 2011

Greet all the saints in Christ Jesus. The brothers who are with me send greetings. All the saints send you greetings, especially those who belong to Caesar’s household.

Philippians 4:21-22

The apostle Paul was innocent of any wrongdoing. Yet he was arrested and imprisoned, even faced possible execution all because he preached the gospel of Jesus Christ. Did he complain? Was he filled with self-pity? Did he doubt God? No. He rejoiced! He was filled with joy because he saw God’s purpose for him. The Lord had put him where he was at that very moment in time.

Prayer:

Lord, it is your will that all come to a knowledge of the truth.  Use me to bring the message of salvation to people so that they may be brought to saving faith in Jesus.  Help me be your witness even under difficult circumstances. Amen.
