Devotion - August 25, 2011

(Solomon said), “So give your servant a discerning heart to govern your people and to distinguish between right and wrong.  For who is able to govern this great people of yours?”

1 Kings 3:9-10

Thanks to Walt Disney and others, we’ve all heard of the magic genie who grants you a wish or three for anything you want.  I doubt most folks have ever asked themselves what they would ask for if they were given that opportunity.  Why?  Because it isn’t realistic.

Prayer:

Lord, earthly blessings are important, and you have given me too many of those to count.  But today I ask you not for more money, better health, or a trouble-free life; instead I ask you to give me wisdom that I might have deep contentment with all you’ve given me, and make choices that honor you as my Savior.  Amen.

Devotion - August 24, 2011

We know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose. For those God foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brothers and sisters. And those he predestined, he also called; those he called, he also justified; those he justified, he also glorified.

Romans 8:28-30

ARE YOU LOVED?

Prayer:

Lord God, with your perfect love you had mercy on me.  Thank you for not giving me what I deserve, but instead forgiving my sins, calling me to faith and giving me heaven as my eternal home.  Whether or not I see how, give me confident faith that you do as you promise—you work all things for my eternal good.  Amen.

Devotion - August 23, 2011

Join with others in following my example, brothers, and take note of those who live according to the pattern we gave you. For, as I have often told you before and now say again even with tears, many live as enemies of the cross of Christ. Their destiny is destruction, their god is their stomach, and their glory is in their shame. Their mind is on earthly things. But our citizenship is in heaven. And we eagerly await a Savior from there, the Lord Jesus Christ, who, by the power that enables him to bring everything under his control, will transform our lowly bodies so that they will be like his glorious body. Therefore, my brothers, you whom I love and long for, my joy and crown, that is how you should stand firm in the Lord, dear friends!

Philippians 3:17-4:1

Trusting in Jesus alone as our Savior, we have a place reserved for us in heaven. That’s very good news!  With firm confidence we look forward to our life as citizens of heaven.

So how are we to live knowing that we have a home secured for us in the hereafter? The Christian author C.S.

Prayer:

Jesus, guide me every day to faithfully fulfill your purpose for me in my life now.  Help me be confident and patient as I wait the fulfillment of your promise to take me to heaven.  Amen.

“The kingdom of heaven is like a merchant looking for fine pearls. When he found one of great value, he went away and sold everything he had and bought it.”

Matthew 13:45-46

The Kingdom Of Heaven Is Our Greatest Possession

Prayer:

Lord Jesus, being a member of your kingdom is my most treasured possession.  Keep me from ever being convinced otherwise.  Amen.

Devotion - August 19, 2011

“The LORD will roar from Zion and thunder from Jerusalem; the earth and the sky will tremble. But the LORD will be a refuge for his people, a stronghold for the people of Israel.”

Joel 3:16

You can act like it’ll never come.  You can put off dealing with that gnawing, “how to get right with God” issue.  You can keep yourself busy and occupied by chasing money, recreation and other worldly distractions – and you can even pretend you’re doing just fine living like that.

Prayer:

Dear Savior, keep me safe in your promises, that there is no condemnation for those who are in you, that I might be safe on Judgment Day and share your safety with many.  Amen.

Devotion - August 18, 2011

Not that I have already obtained all this, or have already been made perfect, but I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me. Brothers, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus. All of us who are mature should take such a view of things. And if on some point you think differently, that too God will make clear to you. Only let us live up to what we have already attained.

Philippians 3:12-16

"Citius, altius, fortius" is a Latin phrase meaning, "swifter, higher, stronger." It is the motto of the Olympic games and does well to embody what our calling in Christ pursues.

Christ has already taken care of saving us for a Christian life and setting us apart for an eternal life in heaven. He's placed us on the path of righteousness, but still lets us run.

Prayer:

Lord Jesus, help me finish the race. Guide my feet to follow the way that you speak in your Word. Extend my arms to reach others in love. Wipe my tears of sorrow so that I can better see the path. Lead me on, Lord. Lead me on. Amen.

Devotion - August 17, 2011

In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groans that words cannot express. And he who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints in accordance with God’s will.

Romans 8:26-27

Hurting.  Lost.  Alone.  Confused.  That emotional combination might not hit us every day, but when it does visit, it can be frustrating or paralyzing.  We ponder what to do and what to say.

Prayer:

Holy Spirit, thank you for loving me so much that you intercede for me when I don’t know what to pray.  Use this good news to strengthen my faith.  Improve my prayer-life.  Increase the frequency of my prayers.  Line up my heart, my wants and my prayers with your will.  Amen.

Devotion - August 16, 2011

I want to know Christ and the power of his resurrection and the fellowship of sharing in his sufferings, becoming like him in his death, and so, somehow, to attain to the resurrection from the dead.

Philippians 3:10-11

Prayer:

Jesus, help me to grow in my understanding and appreciation for your great love as my Savior that I may know the power of your resurrection as I live and when I die. Amen.

Devotion - August 8, 2011

Then Jesus told them many things in parables saying, “A farmer went out to sow his seed.”

Matthew 13:3

Seed, Ground and Harvest

Jesus regularly used common, everyday pictures to teach precious lessons.  One day he used the picture of a farmer who was sowing seed in his field.  It was a familiar picture, but not everyone who heard it appreciated the lesson.

Prayer:

Blessed Lord, sow the seed of your Word in my life.  Cause it take root and grow. Then, make it produce a rich harvest of good works offered to your glory and in return for your precious love.  Amen.

Devotion - August 5, 2011

And the LORD said, “I will cause all my goodness to pass in front of you, and I will proclaim my name, the LORD, in your presence. I will have mercy on whom I will have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I will have compassion. But,” he said, “you cannot see my face, for no one may see me and live.”

Exodus 33:19-20

There are days when we feel like everything is broken and we’re sort of stumbling along.  Between busy work and demanding children and faithless friends, they’re the days that can make us want to cry out, “Lord, have mercy!”  But not always in the way we say it in church...  Rather, sometimes it comes out more like a demand, hands thrown up in despair.

Prayer:

Lord of mercy, keep us today in your love through your Word.  Remind us that you go with us each day and, therefore, we are not lost.  Look on us with favor and grace for Jesus’ sake.  Amen.
