WELS Prison Ministry
Our mission is to bring the Gospel of Jesus Christ to people who are serving time in jails and prison. We provide Bible correspondence courses, Bibles and other printed spiritual materials for inmates free of charge. We also provide leadership training for lay Christians and pastors who are interested in beginning or expanding a jail or prison ministry.
If you would like to refer an inmate to our ministry please use this form.
WELS Prison Ministry is active on a number of fronts. Through a central office at New Ulm, MN, a small staff utilizes the services of hundreds of volunteers to manage a ministry-by-mail program that has reached over 43,000 inmates. Volunteers are needed to accomplish a variety of services:
- Prepare regular mailings
- Correct Bible correspondence tests returned to our office by inmates
- Serve as pen pals to inmates
If you would like to learn how you might serve as a volunteer, please contact us.

CALL ON OUR NEW JAIL MINISTRY TRAINING TEAM
WELS Prison Ministry is teaming up with Wisconsin Lutheran Institutional Ministries to train and support lay men and women for face-to-face jail ministry through workshops, consultation visits, and online jail ministry courses. The team consists of two laymen and a pastor, Duane Anderson, Mark Santelman, and Pastor Roger Zehms. This jail ministry training initiative is largely supported by a generous grant from WELS Kingdom Workers.
Jail Ministry Training Team members are already alerting pastoral conferences, WELS congregations, groups, and interested individuals to their services. If you or your congregation would like to learn more about the many mission opportunities behind jail doors, please contact our Jail Ministry Training Team at jmtt@wels.net or call:

WELS Prison Ministry is mission work; most inmates are unchurched. Many are searching for answers to spiritual questions. Whether you are a lay person or an ordained clergyman, opportunities to witness for Christ abound in prison ministry.
The WELS Mission Partner program allows interested individuals opportunity to lend financial support to favorite areas of ministry. Mission partners also receive regular ministry updates. WELS Prison Ministry participates in this program. If you would like to become a Mission Partner with WELS Prison Ministry, please visit this Website for further information and an application form.
