QA with Jared Oldenburg, home missionary
Jared Oldenburg, formerly a pastor at Light of Life, Covington, Wash., was commissioned to open a new home mission in Castle Rock, Colo., on July 18. Read on to learn more about Oldenburg and the first new WELS home mission opening since 2008.
Q: What excites you about working with the Castle Rock mission?
A: There is something special—and terrifying—about being wholly reliant on the Lord. Things [were] comfortable for me in Washington. However, Jesus does not call any of us to "take up our comfort" and follow him. Instead, we are called to deny ourselves—and sometimes that means leaving what is comfortable and using the gifts God has given us to expand his kingdom through the gospel. That is exciting—to know we are leaving what we know to meet new people, to become part of a new community and learn their unique culture, to work with fellow believers who are also excited about changing lives with the changeless gospel.
Q: How do you feel that God has prepared you to serve there?
A: Obviously the solid college and seminary training that every pastor receives is vital. Specifically, though, the hands-on mission training I was able to have through the Vicar in Mission Settings program helped put theory into practice. Finally, I would think my experiences over the last eight years starting in Light of Life will prove to be the most helpful.
Q: What are your first steps?
A: There is a fairly extensive foundational process to starting a church. The pastor and the core group have to learn to understand the culture and become part of the community, and the pastor has to earn the respect and trust of the core group. Ironically, what seems the most difficult—launching a church service—often takes the least amount of time. You have a definite goal with measurable parts, so in 12 to 18 months you can have a well-functioning worship service.
Q: Anything else to add?
A: In my opinion, I believe it is best for a pastor who starts a church to stick around at least a decade or more—and that was my plan at Light of Life. However, God's plans are not always our plans. As I step back, I am able to see how God can continue to bless Light of Life with a new pastor and at the same time see how my gifts and experience are needed in another place.
