WELS mission workers in León, Mexico, began offering English classes in May, an important step toward establishing the first congregation in the mission’s new home city. WELS mission workers relocated to León earlier this year because of increasing drug-related violence in Torreón. “The main purpose of the English-as-a-foreign language classes is that it gives us an opportunity to meet people, become friends, and then carry out friendship evangelism,” says Michael Hartman, WELS mission coordinator in Mexico. “It is also a valuable tool for getting the Lutheran name out in the community.” Almost two hundred students have signed up for classes, and some have expressed interest in studying the Bible. The mission team hopes to begin offering worship services in León later this year. The six-member team and their families currently worship online with St. John’s, Sleepy Eye, Minn., www. stjohnsse.com/.
