POTLUCK POLL

In March we asked you to share the Bible verse to which you constantly return on your walk of faith here on earth. Thanks to all who responded. Here are some of your favorites. See even more replies online at www.wels.net/forwardinchrist.

My comforting Bible verse is Psalm 118:24: "This is the day the LORD has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it." When I turn to this verse, I am reminded that God is in charge and promises to always bless me. It is up to me to turn this promised day into good no matter what my circumstance because he is always faithful and never forgets his promises to me.—Linda Hamann

Recently my favorite verse and secure thought is 2 Corinthians 12:9: "My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness." With aging, various maladies do come along for many of us. This passage is a comfort to me. . . . News stories of the unusual accomplishments of some older people make the rest of us feel as if we aren't trying hard enough. Society likes to make us think we can live forever and have the same energy to keep on doing things even if we really just want to reflect on what a blessing the life is that God has granted us. It is a time to give thanks and praise to our Maker.—Ruth Sellnow

"Come, let us return to the Lord. He has torn us to pieces but he will heal us; he has injured us but he will bind up our wounds" (Hosea 6:1). Throughout my life I have seen and felt these words come true. Sometimes our earthly troubles seem so great that it feels as if our very hearts and souls are being torn to pieces. No matter how great our suffering, the Lord is greater. He is our source of help and healing. We have this sure promise that there is always hope in Jesus.—Laura Cherney

When I am burdened by sin, I think of Romans 7:15, where Paul says, "I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do I do not do, but what I hate I do." I realize that a great apostle like Paul was no less plagued by sin than myself. But more important, I am no less forgiven than he.—Mike Koehler

" 'For I know the plans I have for you,' declares the Lord, 'plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future' " (Jeremiah 29:11). There are many verses I have clung to at different times, but this one has comforted and encouraged me through joys and challenges. The Lord plans to bring me safely to heaven with him someday, so I know that he will not abandon me even when my life is falling apart and seems hopeless. When things are going well, this verse reminds me to thank God for the good times that are a gift from him. Whatever happens, this trustworthy gospel promise tells me that I can rest securely in the Lord!—Joyce Koplin
