Seminary Summer Quarter
We want to make all called workers aware of an upcoming opportunity to grow spiritually and professionally through continuing education. Continuing education has received considerable attention since a convention resolution last summer called for the development of a comprehensive and flexible program of professional growth for called workers—a process that has already begun.
From June 21 through July 9, Wisconsin Lutheran Seminary will again offer a number of courses during its annual Summer Quarter. The courses taught at Summer Quarter provide an opportunity for theological study and professional growth to the called workers of the synod and synods in its confessional fellowship. Classes last one, two, or three weeks, depending on the course. For the first time, the seminary will also offer an online course entitled "Leadership in Paul." This course will be taught from June 14 through Aug. 13.
The deadline for enrollment is April 15. The deadline is to enable the seminary to measure course interest and to determine which courses will be offered. Applications will be accepted after the deadline, but some desired courses may no longer be available. Complete information about courses, schedule, and registration can be found at www.wls.wels.net/continuing-education/2010-summer-quarter.
An announcement about an opportunity for continuing education does not just affect called workers. Since these courses will help pastors and teachers grow in their knowledge of God's Word, their ministry will benefit, and those served by their ministry will benefit as well. Deeper insights into the Scriptures, increased knowledge of church history and theology, practical courses on preaching and teaching, and shared insights in ministerial experience can be a real blessing to these called workers and their congregations. Congregations are encouraged to enable their called workers to attend Summer Quarter by providing both the release time and the financial assistance to make it possible.
The seminary will also begin a two-year continuing education emphasis on preaching that will start with the September/October 2010 issue of Preach the Word, a bimonthly newsletter for pastors from the Commission on Worship. Twelve issues will be devoted to ten key areas of preaching that will be a blessing for every WELS pastor and his hearers. Along with these 12 issues there will also be a new Web site devoted to providing pastors with preaching resources.
