WELS cross logo

The WELS logo

The symbol of the cross is recognized by people in virtually all the world. The cross, an instrument of torturous death, has become a sign of victory and life. We use the empty cross because Jesus Christ didn’t just die there and end his ministry. He died for the sins of the world and then rose from the dead to assure us of forgiveness and eternal life.

The cross alone signals that WELS is Christ-centered and has the message of salvation in Christ. The logo need say no more. However, we can see other meaningful symbolism in it:

  • Four sections make up the cross, reminding us to spread Christ’s gospel to the four corners of the world.
  • The three layers of the cross represent our Triune God.
  • The center of the cross is white, the color of heaven and holiness.
  • When printed in color, the rest of the cross is purple, signifying both the passion of Christ and his royalty.

The logo’s form

The WELS logo is a copyrighted image. The following components comprise the WELS logo:

Symbol

The cross symbol with its unique design can stand alone.

Letter style

This is the church’s “handwriting.” The Lucida Sans typestyle picks up the distinct lines of the symbol, thus blending them nicely as a unit.

Church name

The design allows for the acronym WELS alone or WELS and Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod.

Colors

The cross is WELS purple (PMS 2755). The lighter shade is a 60% screen of PMS 2755. If you cannot do a screen, PMS 271 is also acceptable. If a second color is used, it should be WELS beige (PMS 5235). In black and white, it is important that the middle layer is solid black and outside a 50% screen.

WELS logos for reproduction

The WELS logo can be used correctly in five formats. The standard format is shown. This format should be considered before the others in every application.

It is important that users recognize and observe the rectangular shape of all formats. The white spaces of this shape should not be violated. Type and graphic elements that are not part of the logo should be place outside the rectangle.

It is also important that symbol, letter style, and colors not be changed in any way. The logo may be reproduced in black, but not in a color that is not a good approximation of WELS purple.

Members of WELS congregations and schools are granted permission to correctly use this logo for WELS-related activities. Please contact WELS Communication Services if you have questions about logo use. NonWELS organizations and individuals should always contact us for permission to use the logo.
