WEB Terms -- Definitions galore!
Wonder what all the internet "buzz words" mean? Here's a chance to find the answer! The terms are alphabetically arranged. If you have questions on an internet term being used that's not listed... e-mail us! If there is an answer, it will be posted here!
Terms with Definitions
- Anchor
- A section in an HTML document that is earmarked and easily accessed by a link.
- Attribute
- The options or settings of a particular element that defines an HTML tag
- Browser
- The program on your computer that interprets HTML documents on the internet (examples: Netscape, Internet Explorer, Mosaic, Lynx)
- Button
- An image that when clicked provides a browser action
- CGI
- Common Gateway Interface allows you to pass information to the HTML document web host for processing or a function.
- Client
- The visitor on the internet
- Cookies
- A way to store information behind an HTML document for the server from the client side. Cookies retrieve information from the client's browser. Why? When you shop on the net or have to enter preferences on a particular site, the server stores that information for your use so you don't have to fill out additional forms or preferences each time you visit. It's kind of like having a customer account with a web site.
- Copyright
- The right to copy materials... or not to copy materials
- Download
- Getting information from the internet to your computer
- E-mail
- A program that sends messages electronically by a unique address
- Element
- Additional keyword that further defines an HTML tag
- Entity
- A text character that must be encoded inorder for a browser to view it as intended. (example: ampersand)
- External link
- Links outside of the viewed presentation site
- Extranet
- Materials available partially to the public. The rest of the materials are protected for intranet clients accessed via password.
- Form
- An area provided on an HTML document to select or enter data
- Frame
- A divided window with self functioning and displayable content
- GIF
- Graphics Interchange Format pronounced "jiff" is the single most used image format. Developed by CompuServe in order to display an image on multiple platforms. Used for simple colored images such as clipart.
- Graphic
- An image or photo saved in a computer viewable format.
- Hardware
- Concrete computer parts or systems.
- Hits
- The number of times a web page is accessed.
- HTML
- Hyper Text Markup Language is the common language between a web master's document and a browser program to view information on the internet.
- Home Page
- The starting page of a web site presentation.
- Host
- The computer tied to the internet that stores your web page for others to view.
- HTTP
- Hyper Text Transfer Protocol which actually means "the web"
- Image
- A graphic or photo saved in a computer viewable format.
- Internal link
- Links to pages belonging to the same presentation and server.
- Internet
- A collection of networked computers that store information for retrieval and uploads. Most internets are constructed using equipment called routers. This is sort of the connecting mechanism between networks.
- Internet Access
- A way to access the internet. You may subscribe to a service such as AOL or Execpc that allows your browser to view documents on the internet.
- Internet Provider
- AOL and Execpc need to get on the internet too! There are few providers as compared to internet services.
- Intranet
- Think of the intranet as an "interoffice memo". You wouldn't publish your office memo in the New York Times, would you? It's the information that's privy to a group of individuals. The HTML documents can be stored anywhere, even on the internet. But you most likely will need a password and an account to access it.
- ISDN
- Integrated Services Digital Network is another line strung next to the telephone line throughout the area. Not all areas have ISDN lines. Thus your cost can become extreme if not already available in your area. This line is in place of the telephone line modem connection. It can reach a transfer rate of 128 Kbits.
- Java or java script
- A programming language that runs an action or function within an HTML document.
- JPG or JPEG
- Joint Photgraphic Experts Group is pronounced "jay-peg". This graphical format was designed to display a photograph image on the web. It has compression features (used to make the file smaller) and handles color and shading different than a .GIF format.
- Link
- The addressed connection to another HTML page somewhere on the internet.
- Modem
- Hardware that allows you to connect your computer via a phone line to another modem which is connected to a computer or network.
- Navigation
- The means of traveling through a web presentation usually via a link statement or image link.
- Platform
- The type of computer operating system program. (Unix, Windows 95, Windows NT, or even Macintosh :?))
- Plug-in
- An additional program that allows your browser to view or interact with a HTML "plug-in designed" document (Real Audio, Quick Time, etc.).
- Prologue document identifier
- The document type definition states the HTML version of your coding which should be the first statement before the HTML tag, otherwise browser infered. (example: <!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//IETF//DTD HTML 3.2//EN"> )
- Proprietary
- An option that is only possible if using hardware or software for which it was designed.
- Resolution
- A page devoted to resolution.
- Search Engine
- A program (site) on the internet that allows you to find other web pages by entering a keyword.
- Server
- A computer or network that hosts HTML documents or files that is connected to the internet.
- Software
- A computer program that runs on your computer to provide a function or service.
- Story board
- The rough layout of your web presentation most likely with pencil and paper.
- T1 line
- High speed data standard at speeds of 1.544 Mbits per second.
- T3 line
- High speed data standard at speeds of 44.736 Mbits per second.
- Tag
- An HTML code that causes a function or effect to a content item.
- Upload
- Transfer a file from your computer to another computer (can be on the internet).
- URL
- A web site address such as http://www.wels.net
- Web
- Internet Web page address locations.
- Web host
- Computers that store web pages with access to the internet.
- Web host provider
- A company that provides web storage and services to clients.
- Web Page
- An HTML document located on the internet
- Web Presentation
- A collection of web pages on the Internet that has links and images and is written in HTML with a common theme or source.
