Crossing Generations
Can you make a difference in the life of an elementary school child if you are “old” and retired? Bob Schaefer of Brookfield, Wis., has done just that for thirteen years.
For over 35 years, Bob worked as a Mechanical Engineer. In the early years of his working career he worked for companies that produced boat motors. In the later years he was vice president of engineering for a company that produced stainless steel equipment for vending machines, for cooking equipment for fast food restaurants like McDonalds, and the popcorn machines one sees in the movie theatres. I am sure almost every grade schooler has benefited from his engineering expertise!
After his retirement, in 1994, the principal of Pilgrim Lutheran School in Menomonee Falls, Wis. approached Bob and asked if would be willing to volunteer as a mentor for elementary students who were having difficulty with mathematics. Bob agreed and this fall began his thirteenth year of volunteer service!
Most of the students Bob mentors are in the third through eighth grades. Some come only a few times to help them “get up to speed” while Bob has established a tutoring relationship with other students that has spanned several years. Most of the tutoring is done on an individual basis although at times two or three students from the same class work together. His greatest joy comes from seeing a child’s grades improve. Bob’s involvement according to Pilgrim’s principal, Brett Kriese, has made a difference.
Are you retired or planning for retirement? Do you know of someone who has retired and has some time on his or her hands? No special education is necessary, just a love of children. No special tools are necessary, just a few hours of your time. Bob tutors two mornings a week for three hours each day. Pilgrim school did not have an extra classroom but the hallway has served adequately as Bob’s “classroom” these past thirteen years!
If you look for opportunities to make a difference they are there. Pray about it, talk with your school principal, cross generations, and let the students keep you young! The Organization of WELS Lutherans Seniors (OWLS) also offers printed guidelines. Your efforts will be more valuable than any popcorn machine!
