They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them.

Acts 2:3

Jesus' apostles were gathered together in Jerusalem, and it is likely that there were many other believers with them.  (In Acts 1:15 it is noted that there were 120 believers; many of those were probably present on the day of Pentecost.)  And God did ... what?  He placed tongues of fire on the heads of each of them.

Why not suspend one large fireball over the whole group?  God could have done that, but he chose to put individual flames on each person's head.  Why?

Perhaps it's a reminder that God doesn't merely deal with us in groups; he deals with us as individuals.  It's true that God loves the world; thank God for it!  It's just as true that God loves YOU – personally, individually.  It's true that God rules all things for the good of his people; it's just as true that God rules YOUR life for YOUR best interest according to his loving plan.

As we think about the early believers, perhaps our minds first go to people like Peter, James, and John.  That's certainly fine.  But picture yourself in this group on that Pentecost Day in Jerusalem.  Yes, Peter, James and John would have had flames on their heads; but you would have had one, too!  God would have treated you equally with Peter, James and John if you had been there that day!

And God loves you today just as much as he loved those people back then.  He loves you individually, just as he loved them.

Prayer:

O Holy Spirit, continue to bless me with your love!  Guide me, direct me, feed me with your Word, so that I might be assured that you love me.  Amen.
