Devotion - The Greatest War Story Ever Told - May 31, 2010
Daily devotion from John 16:12-15.
“I have much more to say to you, more than you can now bear. But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come. He will bring glory to me by taking from what is mine and making it known to you. All that belongs to the Father is mine. That is why I said the Spirit will take from what is mine and make it known to you.
John 16:12-15
Thank you, thank you, thank you, to all our men and women of the military who are currently serving or who have served us and our country in the past. It is your work that preserves our freedom to share these devotions!
Memorial Day is the one “official” day a year that we set aside to remember the work of the tens of thousands of individuals who have served in the military. We all know someone who has or is serving. If your outdoor barbecue involves a few veterans, no doubt some good “war stories” will be told over a burger and watermelon.
War stories have been around for centuries, but there is no greater war story than that of Jesus Christ who single-handedly took on the forces of evil and terror, Satan himself. The stakes could not have been greater – your eternal life or death. The battle was more intense than any – winner takes all. The victory couldn’t have been more profound. Just when it seemed like Satan won as a dead body was placed in the grave, three days later that body came alive…just as Jesus had claimed. “Jesus lives the victory’s won!” And just like we Americans benefit from the wars our service people have fought, all those who have placed their trust in Jesus as their Savior receive the benefit of the outcome of The War: full forgiveness of sins and the true hope of heaven.
This Great War Story has more details than one can fit in a devotion, but it is a true story that is worth reading about, listening to, and passing on. Jesus himself said to his disciples, “I have much more to say to you, more than you can now bear.” His job was to win the battle. The Holy Spirit was sent to communicate the outcome of the battle through the pages of the Bible. Jesus said about the Holy Spirit, “He will bring glory to me by taking from what is mine and making it known to you.”
This Greatest War Story EVER told has been given in the Holy Bible for us to read, not just once, but often. It’s a story that is to be retold not just once a year, but every day! It’s a story that is true and never gets old. Enjoy reflecting on and exploring it today at www.whataboutjesus.com!
Victorious Lord and Savior, Jesus, thank you for taking on the biggest battle of all time and winning a decisive victory over sin, death and the devil. Recognizing our biggest battle has been won for us, we give thanks for those that fight the very real battles in our world to preserve our freedom to share your story with the world. Protect all military individuals and their families as they fight the “wars and rumors of wars” you told us would happen until you return. Amen.
