Matthew 27:54 - June 29, 2010
When the centurion and those with him who were guarding Jesus saw the earthquake and all that had happened, they were terrified, and exclaimed, "Surely he was the Son of God!"
Matthew 27:54
The Roman centurion was in charge of carrying out Jesus' execution. No doubt during the six hours of the crucifixion, that hardened soldier heard everything Jesus said. As he was impaled by the nails through his flesh, Jesus prayed for his Father to forgive his executioners. Respectfully and obediently, he provided for the care of his mother. To the penitent thief who was crucified with him, Jesus promised that paradise would be his on that very day. Finally, he loudly proclaimed that his mission was finished and confidently commended his soul into the hands of his heavenly Father.
Quietly the one on the center cross bowed his head and died. There was a convulsive reaction by creation itself. The earth shook so violently that massive rocks were split! How terrifying! With everything they had heard and seen, that Roman soldier and his fellow guards realized that they were in the presence of no ordinary man. "Surely he was the Son of God!"
The soldiers' minds and hearts were turned to confess that Jesus was someone special, that he was from heaven, the Son of God. They were brought to faith in Jesus who was raised up on that center cross to be their Savior. How great is the grace of God!
Jesus came from heaven for you, too. He is the Son of God who was your dying Savior and now your living Lord.
Dear Jesus, give me the peace and comfort that comes from the truth that you are my Savior who came from heaven to rescue me from sin and death. Help me live by the confession that you are the Son of God. Amen.
