Devotion - The Most Important Communication - Mar. 11, 2011
Daily devotion from Exodus 24:12, 15-18.
The LORD said to Moses, “Come up to me on the mountain and stay here, and I will give you the tablets of stone, with the law and commands I have written for their instruction.”… When Moses went up on the mountain, the cloud covered it, and the glory of the LORD settled on Mount Sinai. For six days the cloud covered the mountain, and on the seventh day the LORD called to Moses from within the cloud. To the Israelites the glory of the LORD looked like a consuming fire on top of the mountain. Then Moses entered the cloud as he went on up the mountain. And he stayed on the mountain forty days and forty nights.
Exodus 24:12, 15-18
In an age of text messaging, emails, Facebook, Twitter and the like, we get 10s if not 100s of messages a day. They come to our computer at work, on our phone in the car, or through our iPad at home. So many come in a single day that it may be challenging to determine which ones should we read or to which ones should we respond.
What if God texted you today? Would you take the time to read what he wrote or would his word to you get buried in the list of emails and other messages?
If Moses lived in our generation, I wonder if he would have said to God, “Can’t you just text me what you want me to know instead of climbing up the mountain? Then I can just forward it to all the Israelites.”
God didn’t want his message to just blend in with the other communication of the day. He wanted to take time with Moses to both prepare him to receive the message and clearly communicate the message. For a total of 40 days and nights Moses spent with the Lord on Mt. Sinai. The importance wasn’t just communicated to Moses, but to all Israel as the brilliance of the glory of the LORD settled over Sinai for all to see.
When’s the last time you slowed down from your busy life to take in the all important words of the LORD? If your iPad and Blackberry devices, your Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn accounts have your mind filled with a multitude of messages, it’s time to turn them off and sit, maybe not for 40 days, but maybe for 40 minutes with your print-on-paper Bible to read the “law and commands” God has written in it “for our instruction.”
The LORD desires to bless you with his Word. For there and only there we find the most important communication. We have Jesus who forgives our sins and assures us of life in heaven, in the eternal presence of the glory of the Lord!
Lord, lead me today to slow down and enjoy the glorious nature of the Word you have given to me. Let me see your instruction as a blessing to me today and every day of my life. Amen.
