Come, Lord Jesus! “Behold, I am coming soon! My reward is with me, and I will give to everyone according to what he has done. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End. … “I am the Root and the Offspring of David, and the bright Morning Star.” … He who testifies to these things says, “Yes, I am coming soon” Amen. Come, Lord Jesus.

Revelation 22:12,13,16,20

Two times in these verses Jesus says, “I am coming soon.” As you read his words, you can't help but get excited as the anticipation builds for Christ’s imminent return. It is also striking in these verses all the names Jesus uses to describe himself.

He calls himself the Alpha and the Omega, the first and the last letter of the Greek alphabet. He calls himself the Beginning and the End. By him all things were made in the beginning. By him all things, as we know them, will be brought to an end when he comes again. He is also the beginning and end of our salvation. Our hope of heaven begins and ends with Jesus.

Jesus calls himself the Root and Offspring of David. The Old Testament prophets foretold that the Savior, the Messiah would come from the family of David and would reign forever. By calling himself the Root and Offspring of David Jesus reminds us that he is the promised Savior.

He calls himself the bright Morning Star. As the morning star ushers in a new day, Jesus at his first coming ushered in a new day, the day of grace. And at his second coming he will usher in another new day, a day that will never end, a day of eternal joy and bliss for all his believers.

The apostle John, after seeing a vision from heaven, after hearing the voice of Jesus announcing that he is coming soon, responds and says, “Amen, come Lord Jesus!”

Christ has died. Christ has risen. Christ will come again. “Amen, come, Lord Jesus!”

Prayer:

Come, Lord Jesus! Take us home! Amen.
