Devotion - November 16, 2012
Satisfy us in the morning with your unfailing love, that we may sing for joy and be glad all our days.
Along the New Jersey shore record low temperatures caused residents still without electric power to shiver. Homeowners in some seaside Long Island communities camped out in their own homes knowing they were unlivable, but unwilling to surrender their belongings to opportunistic thieves who might help themselves to some early Christmas shopping at their expense. As mud and sand were pumped out of the basement levels of apartment buildings in Far Rockaway, locals could do little besides watch helplessly and wait as their patience ran out.
Then came the news. A powerful nor’easter was on the way, bringing rain and snow.
Disappointment, anger, and fear are all natural under such circumstances. Stress and frustration cause us to do and say things out of character. Sadness and gloom find no relief when we place our confidence in the things of this world. Buildings, homes, and infrastructure might seem permanent, but can ultimately let us down.
Only God’s love never fails. The promises of our eternal God can’t be shaken by earthquakes or blown over by storms. No matter how much you feel shaken in your faith by life’s tragedies, the cross of Jesus still stands. He completed the sacrifice necessary for your sins.
When the next storm comes, take refuge in the never-failing love of Jesus. When despair and disappointment set in, rejoice in the forgiving love of God’s Son. When everything else in life seems temporary, God’s saving love is permanent. Every morning God’s love for you is true.
(Augustine of Hippo, 354-430)
You have made us for yourself, O Lord, and our heart is restless until it rests in you. Amen.
