June 2011- Central Africa Medical Mission

Building bridges to the gospel is a phrase often used to describe our synod’s mission work around the world. Much like Jesus used a woman’s need for water to start a discussion about spiritual matters—so we often use medical care and other humanitarian aid to open the door for outreach. It’s something we first learned through the Central Africa Medical Mission, this year celebrating its 50th anniversary.

Sabrina Ebel and her husband Jeff are members of this church near Phoenix. Their story is just one example of a WELS home mission bearing fruit. It highlights one key strategy of home mission work - reaching out to families in times of transition. Rev. Michael Nitz spends much of his time educating people about basic Bible truths, but not in a traditional classroom.

Nathan Scharf might be your next pastor. When Nathan graduated from the Seminary last spring, he didn’t know where God would call him. He was prepared for any outcome. He was called to Luther Prep and is teaching and supervising a dormitory, and offering daily guidance to the young men who are in the same place he was just ten years ago.
