This story actually starts in the Vietnam war . . . When the Hmong people of southeast Asia joined the Americans to fight communism. When the U.S. military withdrew, many Hmong people were left in a vulnerable situation . . . they were persecuted . . . tortured . . . killed. And so over the past few decades the United States has been bringing these refugees to America . . .

Translating doctrine into other languages is more difficult than you might think. For example, did you know that most of Martin Luther’s writings have still not been translated into English? Even though translation is complex, it’s extremely important. Because when the basic truths of scripture are put into the language of the people, amazing things happen.

When people are in need . . . our synod is there to help . . . reaching out to victims of floods, famine, tornadoes. But the work doesn’t end there . . . because not every disaster grabs national headlines. Our synod stands ready to help in times of personal crisis as well.

In Southwest Detroit, an area in economic transition, the Board for Home Missions has partnered with more than twenty area congregations to provide prayers, support, and volunteers to teach English to recent immigrants from Latin America.

Our synod’s fastest-growing ministry--is now in place at nearly 400 WELS congregations. At Crown of Life in Ft. Myers, Fla., we see how graduates of Martin Luther College’s specialized Early Childhood Ministry program were prepared to startup and manage all aspects of a new preschool there.
