Meaning of Evangelical
What does "evangelical" mean for Lutherans and non-Lutherans?
Answer:
In the proper sense, and according to its etymology, the word "evangelical" means "characterized by the Gospel." As a church body, we're all about the message of God's unconditional forgiveness of guilty sinners through the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. That's the reason we have "Evangelical" in our name.
As you've noticed, however, "evangelical" usually means something else in popular usage. By "evangelical Christian" most people understand "Protestant, not big on liturgy or ritual, generally conservative (even politically!), and characterized by a high view of Scripture--up to and including the view that it is inspired by God and therefore without error."
Some of that we're comfortable with; some of it, we're not. That's why we're grateful for your question--and for any opportunities we get to explain what being "evangelical" means to us.
